Harappan Civilisation for UPSC

       Harappan Civilisation(2350BC-1750BC)

Introduction:- 

                            Harappan Civilisation is the first Civilisation of the Indian subcontinent.
Harappan Civilisation is also called Indus valley civilization.
It belonged to Proto Historic Age and is a Bronze Age civilization.



Discovery:-

         It was in 1921, Daya Ram Sahni has excavated site at Harappa in Montgomery district of Punjab (Now in Pakistan) on the left bank of River Ravi.
In 1922 Rakhal Das Banerji discovered at mohanzodaro in the lakrana district of Sindh(Now in Pakistan) 


Note- John Marshall was the first to coin term Indus Valley Civilisation.



Origin of Harappan Civilisation:-

        #E.J.H. Mackay has considered that the origin of Harappan Civilisation was due to migration of people from Sumer (Southern Mesopotamia).
#Amalanand Ghosh has considered that pre Harappan culture matured to Harappan Civilisation.


Extent of Harappan Civilisation:-

    Harappan Civilisation was spread over a vast area of India , Pakistan and Afghanistan.




Boundaries of Harappan Civilisation

• Westernmost site - Sutkagendor
• Easternmost site- Alamgirpur (UP)
• Northernmost site - Manda Aknoor (Jammu)
• Southernmost site- Daimabad ( Maharashtra)
